Plug Power (PLUG) - Why a Company with $25M in Revenue is up 5,000%

PLUG is trading $6.70, up 15.1% with IV30™ up 10.6%. The Symbol Summary is included below.

Provided by Livevol

Plug Power Inc. (Plug Power), is a provider of alternative energy technology focused on the design, development, commercialization and manufacture of fuel cell systems for the industrial off-road (forklift or material handling) market.

This is a note on what has become one of the most talked about stocks (note I said stock, not company) in the twitter/blogger/stocktwits world. And.. for good reason.

Ridiculous Stat of the Day
Nine months ago PLUG closed at $0.14.  Yeah, fourteen cents.  As of this writing, that makes the 9-month return 4,686%.  Uh... yeah...

More recently, PLUG is up ~320% since Dec 31, 2013.

before we go any further, the Charts Tab (two-years) is included below.

Provided by Livevol

Aside from the 9-month return, and the YTD return, we can see even more myopically that PLUG is up from $2.84 a month ago (136% one month return).

So what's happening?  I found a compelling article from Seeking Alpha, a fellow by the name of Matthew Charles Fox.  Here are a few snippets from his recent article, and ultimately the link to the full article (which is a good read, but quite bullish). Keep in mind, he visited PLUG and in fact has snapshots of the factory in his full report.

History
---
Shares of Plug Power (PLUG) have been in beast mode ever since CEO Andy Marsh held a business update on December 4th and announced a blowout fourth quarter []. Shares have generated a staggering three-month return of nearly 500% [].

The rapid appreciation of Plug Power's value is warranted, and though many critics voiced their cautious opinion, almost all have been subdued. The premier fuel cell integrating company that was infamous for destroying shareholder value for more than a decade is not as small as many think, and after a tour of Plug Power's manufacturing facilities in Latham, NY, on February 28th, 2014, I walked away with [] a sense of excitement for what lies ahead in the not so distant future. []

[] Plug Power has integrated fuel cells into products for the home generation industry, the automobile industry, the telecom industry, and more, without picking up any serious traction. Plug Power was aimlessly driving around for more than a decade with no clear direction [] until CEO Andy Marsh took the reins in 2008.

Marsh began talking to Plug Power's customers, examining what worked and what didn't work, and came to the conclusion that it made sense for Plug Power to pursue its line of products focused on the material handling market. [A]fter resembling a R&D powerhouse for nearly five years, Plug Power is ready to provide a compelling value proposition for businesses engaged with equipment in the material handling, TRUs, GSEs, and range extender markets, representing a conservative estimated combined market opportunity of tens of billions of dollars (not including GenKey offering).

Add the facts that Plug Power is expected to gain exposure to the Asian market through a joint venture later this year, is in the midst of testing a fleet of FedEx vehicles equipped with range extenders, will be deploying Ground Support Equipment (GSE) vehicles for FedEx in 2014, and has been testing Transportation Refrigeration Units (TRU) with Sysco since last year, and it's clear that Plug Power has finally found a destination on its map that enables a straight path to profitability[.]

But there's more... Here's a snippet from an article on Bloomberg:

Future
---
Plug Power Inc. rose to the highest in more than two-and-a-half years after an analyst said the company’s order from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. may lead to more customers including Coca-Cola Co. and Procter & Gamble Co.

“The six-site Wal-Mart order is also a framework contract for future sites,” Rob Stone, an analyst at Cowen & Co., wrote today in a note to investors. “We expect more deals with customers” including Sysco Corp., Kroger Co. and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. Stone raised his 12-month price target to $5.50 from $5.

Present
Market Cap: $690MM

(as of Sep 13, 2013 financials)
Cash:                  $10,960,000
Short-term Debt: $700,000
Long-term Debt: $773,000
Revenue:             $4,627,000
Operating Loss  $3,916,000 (for the quarter ending Sep 30)

So in realized money, this firm is still a baby. Annual sales of ~$25MM is really small for a public firm. But, the articles above to point to reasons for bullishness, certainly. A stock price is the PV of all future free cash flow, so it's not today that matters, but rather, the colloquial "tomorrow." And tomorrow does look brighter than it ever has for PLUG. How bright?... I guess ~$680MM in market cap bright.

The Skew Tab snap (below) illustrates the vols by strike by month.

Provided by Livevol

I note the Mar skew in particular and that is has an upside tilt.  The option market reflects greater upside risk (potential) than downside risk, which is pretty remarkable given the stock is up infinity percent in the last month.  Look how low the volatility is in the Mar $4.5 and $5 strike puts is relative to the $9, $9.5 and $10 strikes.

For now, the option market reflects bullishness, but the overall risk is quite high (the overall volatility), so there is two-tail risk..; let's not fall into complacency.

To read more about skew, what is and why it exists you can click the title below:
Understanding Option Skew -- What it is and Why it Exists.

Finally, the Options Tab is included below.

Provided by Livevol

PLUG has earnings due out 3-13-2014 BMO, sp 3-12-2014 is the last day to trade ahead of that announcement.  The volatility in Mar is priced to 148.09% (green numbers across the top of the Options Tab) while Apr is priced to 128.60%.  That vol difference will grow as earnings approach and we will likely see Mar options priced to ~200% IV by 3-12-2014.

The volatility in this name looks like a biotech, and perhaps in some ways it has the same risk.  This was a $0.14 stock nine-months ago...

Headline
Why Putin's Ukraine gambit meant nothing
Written by Pras Subramanian via Yahoo! Finance.

A day after reminding everyone that Sochi was in the rear-view mirror and that the real Vladimir Putin was back, the modern day ‘czar’ of Russia eased off his hard stance today, claiming he doesn’t want to use force in Ukraine but reserving the right to do so. Russia maintains it’s forces in Crimea, but is sending troops at the border back their bases after ending a “military exercise.”

Although Putin doesn’t really have much to fear in terms of retribution for making mistakes within his own country, the markets were giving him a different story, as Russia’s MICEX (MICEXINDEXCF.ME) index tumbled a whopping 10.8% yesterday. Recovery in markets abroad, and here in the states (^GSPC, ^DJI), have essentially brought us back to the status quo, something which Zachary Karabell of Envestnet felt was the most likely scenario.

03-03-14: End of Day Report - Largest Stock Moves, New 52 Wk. Highs/Lows, Unusual Option Volume

US STOCKS-Wall Street falls on Ukraine tensions
via Reuters (Yahoo! Finance), written by Rodrigo Campos.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Monday alongside other risk assets globally as Ukraine and Russia prepared for possible war after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared he had the right to invade his neighbor.

Ukraine mobilized for war on Sunday and Washington threatened to isolate Russia economically as Moscow's biggest confrontation with the West since the Cold War unfolded.

The S&P 500 had closed at a record high on Friday, and profit-taking was expected on Wall Street due to the political uncertainty.

U.S. factory, spending data hint at improving economy
via Reuters (Yahoo! Finance), written by Lucia Mutikani.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. factory activity rebounded last month from an eight-month low and consumer spending increased more than expected in January, suggesting the economy was regaining some strength after abruptly slowing in recent months.

The signs of a comeback, also evident in a surprise gain in construction spending, should bolster the Federal Reserve's resolve to keep scaling back its massive monetary stimulus. Reports from automakers also showed sales edged up from January's weather-depressed levels.

Endeavour Int'l (END) - Gargantuan Call Trade Ahead of Earnings

END is trading $5.14, up 5.8% with IV30™ down 0.3%. The Symbol Summary is included below.

Provided by Livevol

Endeavour International Corporation (Endeavour) is an independent oil and gas company engaged in the exploration, development and acquisition of energy reserves in the United States and United Kingdom.

This is a quick order flow note... but I'm talking about HUGE order flow...

END has earnings due out on 3-5-2014 BMO, but the trade that caught my eye was in the Sep options.  let's start with the Stats Tab, below:

Provided by Livevol

Note that the firm averages 662 calls traded daily and nearly 44,000 have traded today alone.  Further, the total average open interest in calls (that's all strikes, all months, all calls) is 35,573.

So what happened?... Here you go, check out the Options Tab, below:

Provided by Livevol

In a single trade, 40,000 Sep 5 calls traded for $1.30... yup, 6000% of the daily average and larger than the entire existing open interest in calls.  Those calls are now $1.50 bid.

Those 42,000+ calls in total that have traded give the owner the right to purchase 4.2+ million shares.  END has 46 million shares outstanding... Or, in English, this option trade gives the owner the right to own almost ~10% of the company.

Can END go higher than $5?... The Charts Tab (two-years) is below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

Provided by Livevol

We can see that this was a $13 stock less than two-years ago...

That's all I know.  I don't usually follow order flow, and I'm not in this case either.  But... if this firm ends up ripping on earnings, someone is going to get an uncomfortable call from a regulator I'm guessing.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

VIX - How Today Was Actually Bullish for the Market; But Six Ways it Could Turn Bearish

VIX spot is quoting 16.07%, up 14.8% small with IV30™ (the vol of the vol) up 12.8%. The Symbol Summary is included below.

Provided by Livevol

The market is down today and VIX is up on uncertainty (read: risk) surrounding the happenings in Ukraine.  To get caught up on that news I have included three stories below from this weekend which basically do the trick (all from wsj.com)

This weekend's headlines
1. U.S. Tracks 'Thousands More' Troops Flowing into Ukraine

2. Kerry Warns of Consequences for Russia
Incursion 'an Incredible Act of Aggression,' Secretary of State Says

3. Ukraine’s Acting President Orders Military to Full Combat Alert

OK, now what?...

While the market is down over 1% and VIX spot has popped to over 16%, so far, I think this action is bullish. Yeah... bullish... But this stands for today. Tomorrow could be a different story.

I have written extensively about VIX in the past, especially the vol of the VIX. You can read those posts here:

10-3-2013
VIX - Doomsday Scenarios; It's Not the VIX that Matters; It's the IV of the VIX That is Our Signal

Let's start today's analysis with the Charts Tab (two-years) below. The top portion is the VIX spot price, the bottom is the vol of the VIX (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

Provided by Livevol

On the spot side, we can see that VIX does this ebb and flow "thing" fairly often.  I have highlighted the recent peaks (and the move today) in yellow.  Note that all of the prior peaks are above the current spot.  So, we are seeing a lower high.

In a scared market, news like Russia invading Ukraine, mobilizing 150,000 troops and 9,000 tanks, Russian flags flying over Ukrainian cities and words from the US like "grave consequences" would send the market into a tailspin.  Not just the US market.. Global markets.

But look at the global markets after the weekend:

Europe
FTSE -1.49%
DAX -3.44%
CAC40 -2.66%

Asia
Nikkei -1.27%
Hang Seng -1.47%

US
S&P 500 -0.86%
Dow -1.14%
Nasdaq -1.00%

In short, the US markets are reacting much less abruptly than Europe and Asia.  The DAX index was on the "scary" side, but the rest... eh... a down day, but not a panic.

We can see this "lack" of panic in the volatility of the VIX. Let's turn to the IV30™ chart in isolation, below.

Provided by Livevol

I've highlighted three phenomena:
1. The peak of the vol in the VIX was ~115% (the top yellow line)
2. The current vol of the VIX is ~82%
3. The vol of the VIX has popped in the last few sessions from a low of ~65%

So, the fear in the "fear index" is right about middle of the road (it's actually in the 51st percentile annually), well below the annual high and yes, it has risen of late.

Again, that 51st percentile number reflects... no panic.

Finally, the Options Tab is included below.

Provided by Livevol

Check out that volatility number for the May options across the top in green font: 68.88%.  The option market reflects increased volatility in the future VIX, but focusing on the near-term (Apr options).

See how Apr vol is up 9.8 volatility points, while May is up just 2.4 volatility points.  As of today (and this is for today only), this "Russian thing" is being digested by the US market as:
1. Short-term
2. Not that risky
3. Relatively low impact

How could all of this change?
1. Bullets are fired
2. A full on Russian invasion
3. North Korea gets feisty (they rather quietly fired 2 missiles in to the sea this weekend)
4. The Syrian uprising and the chemical weapon collection/dispatching gets inflamed
5. Iran decides... to speak up

and there's always number six....

6. US economic data misses expectations and the "weather effect" turns out to be more than just weather.

For now, the US market is proving remarkably resilient to external shocks... or remarkably apathetic.

If it's apathy, externalities will make the next post on the VIX will show a reading of 18%+ and the IV30™ of VIX will be 100%.

Here's one more headline to chew on:
----
Ukraine won't kill the bull market

The crisis in Ukraine has the hallmarks of a Black Swan event -- one of those unforeseen shocks that keep investors up at night.

But even though stocks around the world were falling Monday, several experts are confident that the political turmoil in Ukraine -- and the growing risk of a war with Russia -- won't derail the bull market.
