Denbury Resources (DNR) - Size Earnings Bet Comes Back for More

DNR is trading $19.63, up small with IV30™ down 3.9%. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Denbury Resources Inc. is an independent oil and natural gas company. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had 461.9 million barrel of oil equivalent of proved oil and natural gas reserves, of which 77% was oil.

This is an order flow note -- order flow that has repeated. The company has traded over 40,000 contracts on total daily average option volume of just 2,375. The largest trade accounted for 36,000 contracts was a purchase of the May 20/22 call spread for $0.70, selling 12,000 of the May 18 puts @ $0.60 (net $0.10 debit) to fund it. I see 648,000 shares trading $19.58 -- likely the hedge. The Stats Tab and Day's biggest trades snapshots are included (below).

Interestingly, I see a similar trade going up on Jan 26th with the Mar 19/21 c/s and Mar 17 puts. I've included the biggest trades snapshot from that day, below.

That trade, if it was indeed a 19/21 c/s funded by a sale of puts, did quite well, as the stock closed at $19.61 on expo and paid $0.10. So, $0.61 in parity to $0.10 in cost.

The Options Tab (below) illustrates that both of the calls and the puts are mostly opening (compare OI to trade size).

The Skew Tab snap (below) illustrates the vols by strike by month.

We can see how Apr vol is below the back two months -- with May the most elevated. The last two years earnings have been reported on 5-6-2010 and 5-5-2011, so it's a reasonable bet that the next earnings release will be in May of this year. In English, this is an earnings bet.

Finally, the Charts Tab (six months) is below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

On the stock side, we can see that the underlying dipped to $11.37 in Oct and has now found its way to nearly $20. On the vol side, we can see how the implied has actually dipped of late -- now below both the short-term and long-term historical measures. The vol comps are:

IV30™: 31.75%
HV20™: 35.96%
HV180™: 56.39%

The 52 wk range in IV30™ is [32.12%, 79.11%]. In other words, the implied has breached a new annual low. I do note that the month of the trades (May) shows a 36.58% weighted average monthly vol. While that's not below the annual low, it's still well depressed to levels realized over the last year.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

Cree, Inc. (Cree) develops and manufactures semiconductor materials and devices primarily based on silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN) and related compounds.

This is a vol note in a spiking stock with earnings approaching. Let's start with the tick chart, below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol for the Apr expiry.

I've highlighted that stock pop this morning. It's interesting that the vol popped as well, but then has fallen off as the stock kept rising.

Let's turn to the Charts Tab (six months), below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

On the stock side, we can see the underlying has risen to a near six month high. On the vol side, while the implied is still depressed relative to its history (33rd percentile annual), the move today has pushed it above the short-term historical vol (HV20™). The vol comps are:

IV30™: 58.10%
HV20™: 53.35%
HV180™: 66.45%

The 52 wk range in IV30™ is [39.61%, 94.84%].

Let's turn to the Skew Tab.

Interestingly, as the stock has pushed higher and vol has increased with the stock, the Mar (W) expiry is priced to the lowest vol of the front three expiries. Apr is priced above May. We're projecting the next earnings release for CREE is 4-17-2012, so vol should be rising into that expiration.

Let's turn to the Options Tab, for completeness.

The option market reflects a vol event (probably earnings) in the Apr expiry. The vols are priced to 48.45%, 58.10% and 54.93% for Mar23 (W), Apr and May, respectively. The 52 wk range in stock price for CREE is [$20.25, $50.58]. Note the pricey downside skew (over 70%) in Apr as earnings approach.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

Frontline (FRO) - Stock and Vol Pop on Industry Report

FRO is trading $7.55, up 22.1% with IV30™ up 46.8%. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Frontline Ltd. is a shipping company. The Company is engaged primarily in the ownership and operation of oil tankers and oil/bulk/ore (OBO) carriers.

This is a vol, order flow and stock price note all based on a research report that came out today. Here's the news as summarized by Briefing:

---
Frontline: Tanker rates to be very well supported in the coming weeks - Dahlman Rose

Dahlman Rose notes, there has been a surge in spot market activity during the past week with Saudi Aramco's shipping arm. The firm says, the overall fundamentals of the tanker market remain weak due to new building supply outpacing global import demand growth this year, but this dynamic is likely to take a back seat in the coming months as more oil flows in an effort to minimize the impact of lost Iranian oil will take hold. As such they expect tanker rates to be very well supported in the coming weeks, which positions spot-exposed tanker companies to realize their highest 2Q earned rates since perhaps 2008.

Source: Provided by briefing.com (briefing.com)
---

That news has pushed vol up nearly 50% and the stock up more than 22%. let's start with the order flow. The company has traded nearly 23,000 contracts on total daily average option volume of just 1,840. Calls have traded in a 3.3:1 ratio to puts. The Stats Tab and Day's biggest trades snapshots are included (below).

The Options Tab (below) illustrates the action. There look to be opening positions in the Apr 7 and 8 calls as well as the May 8 and 9 calls (compare OI to trade size). All but the May 9 calls appear to be substantially purchases. The May 9 calls are ambiguous, but my best guess would actually be sales.

The Skew Tab snap (below) illustrates the vols by strike by month.

The shapes across the months are consistent and "normal." The upside calls haven't reacted so abruptly as to break the shape of the term structures.

Finally, the Charts Tab (6 months) is below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

On the stock side we can see the recent rally that has seen the stock rise from $5.49 as of two days ago, to now over $7.50. That's more than 37% in two trading days. On the vol side, we can can see how the implied has popped with the stock today -- up nearly 50%. It is interesting to note that even with this vol pop, the IV30™ is still in the 42nd percentile (annual).

In terms of 52 wk ranges, try this: The stock price annual range is [$2.52, $24.86]. Gulp... The IV30™ annual range is [28.68%, 153.13%]. Double gulp...

Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF) - How a Movie Release Looks Like a Bio-tech Decision

LGF is trading $13.43, down small with IV30™ up 1.2% as of ~10:15am EST. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. is a global entertainment company with a diversified presence in motion picture production and distribution, television programming and syndication, home entertainment, family entertainment, digital distribution and new channel platforms.

This is a vol note with news embedded in the company. I actually wrote about LGF on 2-29-2012 where I noted elevated vol and a calendar vol diff. There was some news powering the vol movement. Here’s a snippet I used in the prior post:

---
Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. says it reduced its loss in the quarter as it cut expenses. Revenue fell because it didn't have any movies in wide release in theaters. The movie studio acquired "Twilight" maker Summit Entertainment last month and has the first "Hunger Games" movie out in theaters next month.

Source: AP via Yahoo! Finance -- What earnings reports reveal about entertainment
---

But the real news now is the release of the highly anticipated “Hunger Games” film. This event (the release and money it produces) pushes vol (risk) and makes an entertainment firm look similar to a bio-tech.  Let’s turn to the Charts Tab (six months), below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

I believe the term I used last time for the stock movement was “awesome.” I still think the adjective holds – this was a $6.50 stock less than six months ago. On the vol side we can see a rising implied as the stock has been range bound – this is common behavior of an underlying with impending news. The vol comps specifically, are:

IV30™: 65.08%
HV20™: 41.95%
HV180™: 38.23%

Let’s turn to the Skew Tab to examine the vols with greater granularity.

This is a gorgeous representation of the embedded news. The front is substantially elevated to the second month, which is in turn elevated to the third expiry. Further, while the back two expiries show downward sloping skews (normal) , the front shows two-sided tail risk with the OTM calls also more expensive (in terms of vol) than the ATM options. In English, the option market reflects both near-term downside risk and upside potential with the news to decide which direction (probably).  This is what a bio-tech looks like with a pending FDA decision or test result.  The major difference, of course, is the absolute value of the vols -- we're looking at 65% (ish) -- bio-techs can get in the 500% range.

Finally, let’s turn to the Options Tab, for completeness.

I wrote about this one for TheStreet (OptionsProfits), so no specific trade analysis here. The rumors for Hunger Games have been good in terms of expected revenue. That means in order for LGF to go higher, the results will have to be even better than the expectations – that’s how stock prices work. We can see that Apr is priced to 65.08% vol while Jun and Sep are priced to 55.03% and 49.32%, respectively.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

Weatherford International (WFT) - Vol Comps Send Mixed Signal

WFT is trading $16.15, down 1.7% with IV30™ up 1.1% as of ~11am EST. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Weatherford International Ltd. (Weatherford) is a provider of equipment and services used in the drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention of oil and natural gas wells. Weatherford operates in over 100 countries and has manufacturing facilities and sales, service and distribution located in the oil and natural gas producing regions throughout the world.

This is a vol note surrounding both depressed IV30™ (or is it?) and some interesting front month (3 day) vol. Let’s start with the Charts Tab (six months), below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

On the stock side we can see the recent drop off of earnings from $17.79 to $15.36 or 13.7% in a day. Since that time, the stock has recovered slightly and more notably, has found a “quiet period.”

Looking to the vol, we can see that the IV30™ is depressed relative to both the short-term historical realized vol (HV20™) and the long-term historical realized vol (HV180™). I’ll talk about those two little horizontal marks in a sec. For completeness, the vol comps are included below (I’ve included the HV10™ as well).

IV30™: 42.93%
HV20™: 69.99%
HV180™: 58.40%
HV10™: 54.56%

The 52 wk range in IV30™ is [30.47%, 80.38%] putting the current level in the 24th percentile (annual).

Let’s turn to the Skew Tab to examine the month-to-month and line-by-line vols.

We can see an interesting upside skew in the front. Some of that is a bit over stated due to a cab bid in the Mar 20 calls (the Mar 19 calls are no bid and therefore do not represent a data point on this skew chart). More notable to me is the holistic view that the front expiry is elevated to the back. A lot of that is attributable to impending expiration.

Looking back to the Charts Tab (above), those two horizontal hash marks in the vol portion represent the Mar and Apr vols. Keeping in mind that the HV20™ is “artificially” elevated because of that earnings move, we can see that the front expiry is priced above HV10™ and HV180™.

Let’s turn to the Options Tab, for completeness.

I wrote about this one for TheStreet (OptionsProfits), so no specific trade analysis here. We can see the 65.42% vs 42.93% Mar to Apr vols as well as that cab bid in the Mar 20 calls creating what looks like a crazy upside skew. A couple of things to note:

(1) Before the earnings event, HV20™ was just 21.88%.
(2) IV30™ rose to just 41.45% on the day before earnings.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

Molycorp (MCP) - Rare Earth -- Is it the Next Oil?

MCP is trading $31.45, up 5.3% with IV30™ down 5.0% as of ~11:20am EST. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Click for Free Trial

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Molycorp, Inc. is a rare earth oxide (REO) producer in the Western hemisphere and owns a rare earth project outside of China. The Company is in development stage. The Company focuses to be an integrated producer of rare earth products, including oxides, metals, alloys and magnets.

The rare earth industry is a contentious one – caught in a battle between China (the world’s largest natural provider) and, well, the rest of the world. Let’s start with some news today, and then work backwards a few – as MCP stock has been on a ride. Here’s a story from AP:

---
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration is bringing a new trade case against China that seeks to pressure Beijing to end export restrictions on key materials used to manufacture hybrid car batteries, flat-screen televisions and other high-tech goods.

The latest action, announced Tuesday, is part of President Barack Obama's broader effort to crack down on what his administration sees as unfair trading practices by a rising economic power that have put American companies at a competitive disadvantage.

The U.S. asked the World Trade Organization to facilitate talks with China over its curtailment of exports of rare earth minerals. The U.S. is bringing the case to the WTO along with the European Union and Japan.

In Brussels, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said China's restrictions "hurt our producers and consumers in the EU and across the world."

Source: AP -- US brings new trade case against China
---

See, I told you, contentious…

Let’s turn to MCP in specific and start with the Charts Tab (six months). The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

On the stock side, from a holistic point of view, we can see how MCP stock has been crushed in the last half year. In fact, although it isn’t pictured here, the annual high was over $77. On the vol side we can see how the implied has been well over 100%, but after the large drops dropped significantly – that is, as the stock found new lows, the vol reflected lower risk (of a further drop and a recovery). As of 3-8-2012, the stock closed at $25.98. But then, March 9th happened. Here’s that news:

---
Molycorp (NYSE: MCP ) has made its biggest move yet, announcing that it is acquiring Neo Material Technologies, a processor of rare earth minerals, for $1.3 billion. The deal will be paid for with 71.2% cash and 28.8% newly issued Molycorp stock, and the market has cheered the deal today, pushing Molycorp shares up 19%.

The company said that the deal will give it more exposure to China, the world's largest consumer of rare earth minerals, and capture even more of the company's production in finished-goods processing.

Molycorp has a history of similar moves, buying Santoku America, AS Silmet, and a stake in Boulder Wind Power in 2011. What these moves do is allow Molycorp to reduce dependence on raw rare-earth minerals prices and get exposure to the end-market demand. In the end, however, the prices for these end products will be driven by the underlying mineral price -- and prices have been falling fast.

Source: TheMotleyFool -- Molycorp's Bold Move
---

It’s a bit convoluted in that there are a lot of moving parts, but ultimately the market liked it to the tune of a ~19% pop. Let’s turn to the Skew Tab to examine the vols with more precision.

This is what caught my attention. Granted we’re but four trading days from expiration, but the front is elevated significantly to the back. Given the recent news, that sounds about right. Note that for all expiries the skew shape is parabolic – reflecting both downside risk and upside potential.

I took a look at the historical skew (exactly three months ago) and I found that the back months did not show the upside parabolic shape. I’ve included that chart, below.

Again, I’m focusing this time on the back (yellow and green) months and the flat(ish) upside skew relative to the chart earlier. In total, the option market reflects greater upside potential when compared to the downside risk now in MCP relative to three months ago.

Finally, let’s turn to the Options Tab.

I wrote about this one for TheStreet (OptionsProfits), so no specific trade analysis here. We can see that while the front expiry is up 14.4 vol points, the second and third expiries are down 2.8 and 4.7 vol points, respectively. I like the rare-earth story, just in general it's fascinating how economic strength is perceived (and defended) by controlling of scare commodities (see oil).

On a side note, did we really think that moving away from oil would move us away from scarce resources controlled by "dangerous" regimes (dangerous = not in US control). I hope not, because... it won't.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

Zynga (ZNGA) - Stock Hits All-time High; Vol Pops

ZNGA is trading $14.93, up 3.1% with IV30™ up 12.9%. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Zynga Inc. (Zynga), formerly Presidio Media LLC, is a social game developer with 232 million average monthly active users (MAUs) in 166 countries. The Company’s games are accessible on Facebook, other social networks and mobile platforms to players globally, wherever and whenever they want.

ZNGA stock just came up on a real-time custom scan. This one hunts for calendar spreads between the front two months.

Custom Scan Details
Stock Price GTE $5
Sigma1 - Sigma2 GTE 8
Average Option Volume GTE 1,000
Industry isNot Bio-tech
Days After Earnings GTE 5 LTE 70
Sigma1, Sigma2 GTE 1

The snapshot of the scan is included (below) in case you want to build it yourself in Livevol® Pro.

The goal with this scan is to identify back months that are cheaper than the front by at least 8 vol points. I'm also looking for a reasonable amount of liquidity in the options (thus the minimum average option volume), want to avoid bio-techs (and their crazy vol) and make sure I'm not selling elevated front month vol simply because earnings are approaching.

Let's start with the Skew Tab to visualize the calendar vol diff.

We can see the vol diff that has opened up between the front and the two back months. The front expiry also exhibits a parabolic skew -- both the upside and downside OTM options are more expensive than the ATM reflecting "evenly likely" two-tailed risk.

Now we can turn to the Charts Tab (below). The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20 - blue vs HV180 - pink).

ZNGA underlying has breached a new all-time high (should it close here). At the same time, the implied was falling... until today where it has popped. The vol comps are:

IV30™: 76.93%
HV20™: 109.41%
HV180™: 83.04%

Finally, let's look to the Options Tab (below).

We can see the vol diff from Mar to Apr is about 8 vol points.

Weatherford Int'l (WFT) - Control Deficiencies and Delayed Filing Push Vol

WFT is trading $17.05, up 3.4% with IV30™ up 15.5%. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Click for Free Trial

-----------------------------------------------------------

Weatherford International Ltd. (Weatherford) is a provider of equipment and services used in the drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention of oil and natural gas wells.

This is a vol note -- depressed vol popping on the day with a calendar vol diff opening up. There is some news -- it's a bit scary:

---
Weatherford files to delay its 10-K

As previously reported, the Company has not remediated its previously disclosed material weakness in internal control over financial reporting relating to current taxes payable, certain deferred tax assets and liabilities, reserves for uncertain tax positions, and current and deferred income tax expense.

Source: Provided by Briefing.com (www.briefing.com)
---

Tricky...

Let's start with the Charts Tab (six months), below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

On the stock side we can see the drop off of earnings just couple of weeks ago. On 2-17-2012 the stock closed at $17.59 (the day before earnings). Although the stock fell immediately following the release, the stock is now just below that initial level -- so a nice recovery. On the vol side we can see that the implied has fallen off of earnings (expected behavior) to below 40%.

The 52 wk range in IV30™ is [30.47%, 80.38%], so as of yesterday, that put implied in the 17th percentile (annual). As of today's vol pop, the implied is in the 29th percentile.  It is a bit odd that the vol is still well below the median given the news, so apparently, it's not a big deal?

Let's turn to the Skew Tab.

We can see how elevated the front expiry is to the back two. There's also a notable upside skew in the Mar options -- the Mar 19 and 20 calls increase in vol relative to the ATM. A fairly large vol diff has opened up between the front month and the back two.

I've included the Skew Tab from yesterday, below.

We can see that the front was in fact right about even with Apr and depressed relative to May just yesterday. This delayed filing stuff is pushing vol (read: risk) in the near-term.

Finally, let's turn to the Options Tab.

Mar, Apr and May are priced to 50.99%, 42.81% and 44.58%, respectively.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.

Monster Worldwide (MWW) - Vol Explodes, Stock Spikes on CEO Comments

MWW is trading $8.05, up 16.0% with IV30™ up 77.6%. The LIVEVOL® Pro Summary is below.

-----------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------

Monster Worldwide, Inc. (Monster Worldwide) is parent company of Monster, the global online employment solution. With a presence in approximately 55 countries globally, including key markets in North America, Europe, South America and the Asia-Pacific region, Monster offers online recruiting solutions.

This is a vol and order flow note on some news from the CEO. Here we go:

---
Monster Worldwide Inc. (MWW), the online recruiting service, rose as much as 12 percent after Chief Executive Officer Salvatore Iannuzzi said he’s considering “strategic alternatives” to boost shareholder value.

“Our shareholders deserve a better return,” Iannuzzi said at a Robert W. Baird & Co. conference in Boston. Before today, shares of the New York-based company had tumbled 59 percent in the past 12 months.

Iannuzzi has already embarked on a cost-cutting plan, an effort to cope with the slow economic recovery and competition from sites such as LinkedIn Corp. (LNKD) that offer cheaper ways to recruit employees. Monster said earlier this year that it would eliminate about 400 jobs, or 7 percent of its workforce, after economic turmoil in Europe caused clients to curb their use of the job-search website.

Source:Monster Worldwide Advances After CEO’s ‘Strategic’ Comment: New York Mover

---

Umm... OK...

Let's start with the order flow. The company has traded over 35,000 contracts on total daily average option volume of just 1,137. Calls have traded on an 8.2:1 ratio to puts with the Mar 8 calls having traded over 17,000x. The Stats Tab and Day's biggest trades snapshots are included (below).

The Options Tab (below) illustrates that those Mar 8 calls are mostly opening (compare OI to trade size). When looking down the entire option chain for MWW, I don't see any OI larger than 4,539 (Mar 7 calls), so the size is notable for his company. The calls have traded as low as $0.05 and as high as $0.90 today. The flow is actually ambiguous as to the side, but the circumstantial evidence would point to purchases as vol his risen.

The Skew Tab snap (below) illustrates the vols by strike by month.

Check out how elevated Mar has become relative to the back two months. As a reference, I have included the skew chart from yesterday, below.

That red dot is Mar (it's just a single point b/c only one OTM options had a bid). Today, well, there are lots of them. Looking back to the Options Tab (across the top), we can see Mar vol is up 44.5 vol points while Apr and Jun are up 24.3 and 14.8 vol points, respectively. So, in English, the front is reacting the most.

Finally, the Charts Tab (six months) is below. The top portion is the stock price, the bottom is the vol (IV30™ - red vs HV20™ - blue vs HV180™ - pink).

I've highlighted the stock pop today. As of this writing, the underlying is only up $0.71. The day range is rather large -- [$6.88, $8.59]. The vol spike is unreal. The ATM straddle was worth ~ $0.50 yesterday (on close). Today, it's worth more than $1.00.

This is trade analysis, not a recommendation.
